The Architect Behind the Course
Mario Schjetnan — Mexico's Master of Landscape
The golf course at Hacienda Cocoyoc was designed by Mario Schjetnan, one of Mexico's most celebrated landscape architects and founder of Grupo de Diseño Urbano (GDU).
Educated at UNAM and with a Master's degree in Landscape Architecture from UC Berkeley, Schjetnan has spent nearly five decades shaping Mexico's most iconic public spaces — from Chapultepec Park in Mexico City to the gardens of Hacienda Cocoyoc.
In 2025, Schjetnan and GDU were awarded the prestigious Oberlander Prize — the highest international honor in landscape architecture — recognizing a lifetime of work that blends Mexican cultural heritage with world-class design.
